Sažetak
The selection and improvement of sour cherry cultivars are of great importance in fruit production. Increasing climate extremes highlight the need for introducing cultivars that are more adaptable and stable in production. In sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) production in the Republic of Croatia, the ‘Oblacinska’ variety dominates in the continental region, while the widely known and high-quality ‘Maraska’ variety prevails in Dalmatia. Sour cherries are primarily grown for industrial processing, while the production of cherries for fresh consumption is negligible. In industrial sour cherry production, there is a growing need to expand the range of cultivars, both for the processing industry and for fresh consumption, where they could serve as an excellent supplement to the availability of fresh fruit during May and June, coinciding with the ripening of early-season fruits. This paper presents the procedure for evaluating and introducing new cultivars for testing and future selection, with the goal of identifying those that will yield the best results under changing environmental and production conditions. When introducing new cultivars, long-term trials must be conducted at multiple locations to assess the adaptability and stability of the introduced varieties.
