Sažetak

The paper reconstructs the matrimonial proceedings involving Nicolò Voinovich and
Caterina Bancovich, both residents of Grisignana-Grožnjan, who, in spite of having
procreated, were banned from marrying in facie ecclesiae because at the time of
requesting the obligatory data, before the announcements or at the time of their
publication, there were rumours about their very close relations (third degree of
consanguinity), which constituted impedimentum dirimens and would have not only
made the future marriage illicit, but it would also have meant that it had never even
happened. This was hardly an issue of little importance for those living in such small
communities, where the life of “public concubines” was regarded as “a state of sin”
and made it impossible to take part in the public life of the parish. The matter was
swiftly brought to an end in the late 1651, with the assurance that Nicolò Voinovich
and Caterina Bancovich would be living separately whilst waiting for the completion
of the procedures and the issuance of the Decree making it possible for them to
register their marriage.
