Abstract

The salt pans, and hence the production and trading of salt, are an ancient profession.
Consequently, their presence from Trieste and the Noghere Valley in the territory of
Muggia along the entire Istrian coast has left its mark and had a significant impact
on the economy of urban centres where they were established. In particular, this
paper explores the salt production activity in the territory of Muggia, following the
historic traces that attest to the presence and development, the organisation and
administration in the management of salt production and salt trading, the location
of the warehouses where salt was stored, in addition to insights in everyday life,
drawing information and data from the documents kept at the Historical Archive of
the Municipality of Muggia (Fund “Testamenti” (Wills) and “Vertenze Giudiziarie”
(Judicial Disputes), at the State Archives of Trieste-Fund “Commissione Provinciale
dell’Istria 1813-1814” (Provincial Commission of Istria 1813–1814), from the
“Minutes of the Municipal Council of Muggia in the years 1808-1813” held at the
Diplomatic Archive included into the Attilio Hortis Trieste City Library.
