VISION OF THE WATER CONNECTION DANUBE - ADRIATIC

Sažetak
Republic of Croatia is a member of Danube Commission and this gives her the opportunity to use water ways that connect industrial regions of the Western Europe with agricultural and raw material sources in the east of Europe. New channel Danube – Main – Rhein opens water ways to Black sea, Mediterranean, Atalntic ocean, Indian ocean, North and South America and Far East.
This gives the opportunity to use much cheaper and shorter way, passing through Danube and Mediterranean, across the Croatian territory. 1,200 years ago Charlemagne thought about this idea. Through the history, many other famous people thought about this possibility, such as counts Zrinski and Frankopani, bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac and Ljudevit Adamić. In 1786. French expert J. F. Marie made a sketch of this road including a channel Kupa – Adriatic for the royal court of Vienna. Just before the break of the WW II, in 1939., engineer Dragan Petrik made the project Bakar – Sušak – Kupa – Sava – Danube or water connection Adriatic Sea – Baltic Sea. Among other famous authors and promotors of this idea, it is necessary to mention people who strated to talk about this idea, analysed it and encouraged it: brothers Ivan and Josip Skomerža from Crikvenica, and Vjekoslav Kesner, who also lived in Crikvenica.
The first step would be to build the channel from Vukovar to Slavonski Šamac and then it would be necessary to improve the navigability of river Sava, to clean Kupa so that it could be navigalbe to Ozalj. From Ozalj to Guča, near Brod na Kupi, traffic would be organized by the system of levels and pulling. From Guča to Bay of Bakar (27 km) channels and water uspinjace or underground channels should be built. Another possibility would be to build combined (multimodal) ways.
