BEGINNINGS OF EMIGRATION FROM NOVI: Migration Process in Vinodol, part 1
Ivan Barbarić
Sažetak
Until the middle of the 18. century inhabitants of Vinodol lived from agriculture, animal-breeding and did different works connected to the forests, while women usually took care of households, gardens and cattle and were part of other agriculutural works. The manufacture was natural until the 18. century, when industrial society began to influence the agriculture and the way of life of people from Vinodol. They started exchanging goods which gradually, but essentially, changed the social and economic situation. In this situation the land works were not enough to feed the family, so men started to do other works, leaving more often the region where they had been born. This was the beginning of economical migration. At first it was mainly daily migration, but afterwards men had to be absent more than one day, so it finally became total migartion. Men were excellent workers, mostly masons, stone cutters and they mainly worked on the construction of roads on behalf of Austria and Hungary, they built houses, first near the coast and in Rijeka, and later in Austria, Hungary, italian regions and all around Europe, America and Australia. More and more people imigrated, especially in the second half of the 19. century when the emigration reached its peak. This process continues through the 20. century and lasts until today.
