Abstract

The reality of Šolta is largely determined by emigration, with twice as many inhabitants having emigrated since the late 19th century than are currently living on the island. Focusing on the 20th century, this research explores the relationship between those who had left and those who have remained; their motivation for maintaining mutual connections and the continuity and frequency thereof; and the implications for the daily lives of both sides of this transnational social community. It showcases the practices through which the emigrants, despite being physically absent, maintain a sense of belonging and presence in the local community, as well as strategies through which the remaining population instills a sense of responsibility among the emigrants towards the local community.
