Development of Private Teacher Training Colleges for Women in Slovenia

Abstract
This paper reconstructs the relationship between the state and the Church during the establishment of private education for teachers. We find that the crucial turning point in this relationship came in 1850 when the Provisional Act on Private Teaching (Provisorisches Gesetz über den Privatunterricht) came into force – with this act the Catholic Church started to lose its dominant position in the fi eld of education in the Habsburg Monarchy as its provisions on the establishment of private schools put it on an equal footing with other confessions and private persons. The field of private teacher training colleges was regulated in more detail by the State Act on Primary Schools of 1869. In Slovenia, it was nuns who provided private education for teachers.
