Abstract
Military personnel are the greatest value and advantage of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia. Patriotism, education, training, discipline, leadership and the ability to adapt to any situation present their best qualities that manifest themselves on a daily basis as they carry out their missions and tasks in Croatia and abroad. The present school system provides officers with certain knowledge, competence and skills needed to carry out tasks in different positions in all components of the Croatian Armed Forces. Military training is an integral and inseparable part of the process of building up the army as an institution. Throughout the world military schools undergo transformation to become centres of development, quality teaching and training based on scientific research. Truly democratic armed forces require thorough military professionalism that may be achieved by well organised training, increasing education and lifelong learning for officers and non-commissioned officers so that they may adapt to the contemporary military environment and to the work in the present and future military alliances (NATO, EU, UN). Military education shows a tendency towards abandoning the traditional closed military education. Modern military education is adapting to new forms of warfare and to the development of a wider defence and general education on the university level. One of the greater challenges facing Croatian military teaching establishments is to connect military and civil education based on a comprehensive approach.
