Abstract
This paper starts with notes from the interesting life of German hyphenate Alexander von Humboldt (1769 –1859), who was a seminal natural scientist, polyglot and founder of several scientific disciplines. That is followed by a brief overview of the organizational structure and activities of The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Fellowship Programme for young scientists from all over the world who wish to study at German universities and institutes and German scientists interested in studying abroad. The paper continues with data relevant to the founding of the Croatian Humboldt Club, whose membership is entirely scientific and reserved for those who have been awarded the Humboldt Fellowship, i.e. researchers to whom the world’s most prestigious financial grant was made. In addition to chronological and personal data about the persons who were the founders of the club and those elected for various positions in this prominent society of Croatian scientists during its twenty years of existence, the aper brings reflections on the club’s core activities while directing attention to the scientific excellence achieved by its members in Croatia and abroad.
