Contribution of the Pedagogical Magazine Zora (1884 – 1889) to the Professional Training of Teachers

Abstract
The paper presents the magazine Zora, the fi rst pedagogical magazine in Dalmatia published by the Teacher School in Arbanasi between 1884 and 1889. These were the years of Croatian language bloom with printing of newspapers and magazines, and Dalmatia was one of our first provinces in this respect. At the time, they printed over 200 newspapers and magazines and half of them were in Croatian. In the 19th century, Zadar was not only the political center, but also the most important cultural center of Dalmatia. Zadar was right behind Zagreb in the number of published periodicals. The significance of Zora was reflected in the selection of the latest topics relating to education and it provided great assistance to the professional training of teachers at the time. This paper highlights some of the most interesting pedagogical topics contemplated in Zora’s permanent sections, with a special review of them from the present perspective. Numerous topics in pedagogy, teaching methods and psychology and examples of school class management characterize the magazine as a sort of a manual for teachers and as help to parents in their school and home education, aiming to spread and inform about the then contemporary science and general cultural achievements. It was already clear that education for the teacher profession required professional training and lifelong learning – in absence of literature, this magazine was exceptionally significant. This was primarily due to a modern approach to numerous topics relating to the interaction of all stakeholders in the educational process, focusing on the relationships between teachers and students and teachers and their parents.
