Abstract

This article examines five examples of history painting in Croatia collected by the War Archive and Museum of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), an institution active during the 1941–1945 period. Through its acquisition efforts, the institution obtained the following
artworks by purchase, official transfer, or donation: Croatian Warrior from the 10th Century and two portraits of Petar Zrinski by Josip Uhlik; Petar Zrinski’s Victory over the Ottomans near Otočac by Karl Matzek; and Petar Zrinski in Battle with the Ottomans by Krsto Hegedušić. Some of these paintings are discussed here for the first time. Based on archival records and museum documentation, the article provides new insights into the iconography, authorship, and provenance of these artworks.
