Sažetak

The beginnings of reform pedagogy in Croatia relate to the work of two professors from Zagreb - Vjekoslav Koščević (1866-1920) and Ivan Tomašić (1868-1956). The reformation of pedagogic activities in Croatia started in the late 19th century when Koščević expressed his disagreement with Herbat’s pedagogy and its followers. In the early 20th century his follower Tomašić traveled across Central Europe in order to gather experience and get acquainted with the key persons of the artistic pedagogy movement.
The founding of the Croatian Society for Pedagogic Development in 1904 and “Preporod” magazine in 1905 marked the beginning of the decade of organized activity in the promotion of reform pedagogy - first the idea of artistic pedagogy and later the working school idea. Evident eclecticism, lack of articulation and insuffi cient envisagement of the first phase of reform pedagogy on the one side, and certain opportunism and confidence in the existing pedagogic authorities on the other were the reasons for relatively weak reception of reform pedagogy in Croatia up until the First World War. However, the work of two professors from Zagreb played a major role in raising sensitivity of the expert public for the matter, that later facilitated faster and easier reception of reform pedagogy in Croatia, primarily the working school idea, after the First World War.
