Ivo Perić
Abstract
Unfavorable position of Croatian people in monarchist Yugoslavia instigated Croats to constant political battle. Under the influence of this battle, in which all classes within Croatian society participated, and international political circumstances, that threatened the existence of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, there was political Agreement between Dragiša Cvetković, the president of Yugoslav Government and Vladko Maček, leader of Croatian National Movement, on forming Autonomous Banovina of Croatia, in which the majority of Croatian people was embraced. Education and school system were under the autonomous jurisdiction of Banovina. This article presents school normative deeds, valid in the Banovina of Croatia, those reached by the autonomous bodies from the Banovina of Croatia, and those reached by the state government (three-member Regency).
The author described the situation with elementary, vocational, high and higher education in the Banovina of Croatia, as well as intentions from its Department for Education to improve educational work in schools. For achieving some of the results (which, for instance, intended to fundamental development of teaching curriculum and making better textbooks) the time was essential. War was becoming more intensive in Europe and had negative impact on every-day life in the Croatian territory. After declaration of war to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia the Banovina of Croatia also disappeared. It lasted a little more than a year: from August 26th 1939 until April 10th 1941.
