Abstract

The article represents the development of community colleges in Slovenia in the period between two world wars, from 1918 till 1941. It deals with the causes for their founding which initiated the need for mass education, especially adults. It describes intentions and theoretical views of individuals, intelligentsia of the time, people working in culture and pedagogues for the foundation and development of community colleges in Slovenia. The theoretical views by Karlo Ozvald, Ph. D. and Franjo Žgeč, Ph. D. who were interceding for the education of entire population (rural and working), for the education of “the widest classes” by community colleges following Danish community college model, are given in more detail. It presents and analyses the fi rst community colleges in Slovenia (Celje, Maribor, Jesenice and Ljubljana). The existing available sources showed the impact of each community college and recognition of their general importance for the development of continuance in adult education in Slovenia.
