Teacher Ivan Tomašić: from pedagogue to politician
Mira Kolar
Sažetak
Ivan Tomašić (1868 – 1939) marked teachers’ work in Croatia from the eighties in the 19th century until the fi rst great world crisis. In those times Tomašić distinguished himself as a pedagogue of Pestalozzi School but he was also a great promoter of more modern education related to social politics and sports among children and young. Linking the need of mental and physical development of children in public schools encouraged him to connect with Hrvatski Sokol, where he wrote articles that included certain messages. Later he became one of the leaders of Učiteljsko društvo in Zagreb, and after the First World War he worked from 1921 to 1929 as the President of the Association of Croatian Teaching Societies. Even though he did not oppose Yugoslavia he intended that Croatian Societies kept their specialty. It brought him directly to organized movement by Stjepan Radić, and in 1927 he started new magazine Hrvatski učiteljski dom inspired by the same newsletter by Radić. The announcement of the 6th January Dictatorship means the end of works of Ivan Tomašić but his son, Ljudevit Tomašić, in a way continued his father’s works. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century Ivan Tomašić was a role teacher needed in the backward society and education system in Croatia. His many-sided activities, traveling to many European countries, knowledge of foreign languages and extraordinary diligence resulted in better and high quality works in theoretical and practical education system. He contributed in dedication to graphic principles in training and practical workshops for children, and in intentions that town Zagreb should look after its poor and abandoned children.
Tomašić thought he could continue his works in the same way after 1918 but that did not happen. His ideas on association with teachers’ societies in a new state did not follow centralistic policy driven by Yugoslav Government. There were bans, retirements, difficulties and complete negligence related to the way Tomašić worked before 1918. As the President of the Association of Croatian Teaching Societies in Zagreb he greatly influenced Croatian teachers. The political scene was conquered by new people and Tomašić was forgotten as the first teacher from Trnje, and as the first who catalogued children’s games, and a writer of many handbooks for the young, as well as the reformer of elementary school education.
