Sažetak
Cultural heritage of Zadar and its region rests on rich historical monuments: from monumental remains from the Antique (Forum, etc.), important churches of the Early Middle Ages (St. Donat, etc.) and Romanesque period (cathedral church of St. Stošija) to gold craftsmanship (Gold and silver of Zadar) and others. The valuable collection of the Archeological museum (founded in 1830), State Historical Archives, (started in 1625), the richest in Dalmatia, with many convent and archdiocese archives, Scientific library (founded in 1855 – by numerosity and significance of library material it belongs to one of the richest in Croatia), with many valuable church libraries, University library in Zadar and modern City library, and other institutions that keep and store valuable sources from Zadar and Dalmatian history represent the incentive for the development of higher education. The paper presents the development of higher education in Zadar, from Common College by Dominicans (1396-1807), the first university on the territory of Croatia, Lyceum as a higher school (1806-1810), Central School (1810-1812) on the level of university with seven faculties, Central Theological Seminary (1826-1922), Institute for Private Legal Study (1848-1851), Orthodox Institute (1869-1920), Faculty of Philosophy (1956-2002), Teacher Education Academy (1961-1979), Teacher College (1998-2002) to, finally, newly founded University of Zadar (from 2002/2003). The year 2006 celebrates 610th anniversary of foundation of Common College by Dominicans and 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar.
