Abstract

The period of the second half of the 19th century is very important for the development of elementary education in Zagreb and its surroundings. With the development of civil society and economy there is a greater need for the expansion of education and literacy among wider population, and the existing education could not have met new demands. With the development of Zagreb new places in its close vicinity develop and there is a spread of elementary schools in the area. The documentation archived in the State Archives in Zagreb offers insight in the historical development of schools on the territory of present north-east part of Zagreb: Remete, Šestine and Gračani, in the period from their foundation until 1945, when
these localities functioned as independent entities.
