Sažetak

The article gives political, economic, educational and cultural circumstances during the stay of Lavoslav Ružička at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century. That was during the stabile Austro-Hungarian politics, the time of economic, as well as, educational and cultural rise, especially marked in Osijek by building factories, institutions and schools in Art Nouveau.
Lavoslav Ružička completed 4 years of elementary school and 8 years of classics-program secondary school (gymnasium) in Osijek. The article gives information on Ružička’s classmates, from both elementary school and gymnasium. With many of them he kept good relationships his entire life, and many of them became famous and meritorious people. Besides students, there are information on teachers that infl uenced the formation of a young student. As supplement there are a few of his school reports. This insight into Ružička’s gymnasium environment shows where he lived, in what conditions, who he made friends with and who formed him that he developed later in an internationally meritorious scientist, above all in chemistry, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1939.
