Abstract
In the Article there are presented understandings of pedagogical theoreticians on discipline and educational means in elementary and secondary schools in Slovenia in the transitional period from the 19th into 20th century. From different teaching magazines and other resources we realized that the discipline along with teaching curriculum and teachers’ authoritative role held a very important place in school. The discipline with its order, punishing and usage of strict educational means (stick) contributed to firm appearance of youth education at that time. We presented some new views on discipline and usage of educational means in schools in Slovenia. As an example we gave Foerster’s description of comparison of discipline in American and European school systems. An example of American discipline («school district») and its example in Slovenia, which was implemented in 1910 in comprehensive school in Gorica, were described. From different interpretations of then pedagogical thinkers we can draw amconclusion that the mentioned period seemed critical for the discipline and usage of educational means in schools. At that time the criticism of «old school» (Herbart’s) was initiated and new requirements for the school practice bring new view of discipline (abolishing of physical punishment) and educational means (abolishing of stick) and all together new views on education of individuals.
