Peoples’ college in Rijeka in the period from 1945 till 1996

Abstract
Peoples’ College in Sušak started on 29th July 1945 with a lecture «Federative State Croatia» given by Vinko Antić Ph. D. in the gymnasium hall. In 1947 People’s College Rijeka was founded. National Board of town Rijeka made, on the Town Council session held on 18th March 1955 and on the Manufacturers’ Council session held on the same day, the Statement to found Peoples’ College in Rijeka as an institution with independent financing on 1st January 1955. Based on the Basic Decree on Institutions with independent financing the National Board of Rijeka District made the Statement, on 24th January 1956, in which Peoples’ College in Rijeka starts operating as a budget institution financed from the budget of the National Board of Rijeka District on 1st January 1956. In 1962 three Rijeka’s municipals merged – Old Town, Zamet and Sušak - into one, Rijeka, and related to it three peoples’ colleges merged into one Peoples’ College Rijeka. Workers’ College was operating until 1953 as a constituent part of Local Syndicate Council in Rijeka. On its foundation meeting on 26th June 1953 a decision was made that Workers’ College should became an independent institution for adult education in Rijeka with its Governing Board, Regulations and its Curriculum. With the merger of Workers’ and Peoples’ Colleges along with the Centre for Economics and Family Standard a new institution was created, Workers’ College, that started working on 1st January 1965. Teaching was continuous and without interruptions until the referendum organized by employees held on 14th December 1990 when the institution changed its name to People’s College. On 16th May 1991 Workers’ Council of the College made the decision on suspension of classes due to the lack of financial resources. With the decision of Workers’ Council of the College on 26th June 1992 College was transformed into a public limited company. Peoples’ College plc based on the Act on Companies made a registration at the Commercial Court into Peoples’ College Ltd.
