Abstract

The paper, with the presentation of a small collection of Employees’ Papers and Personals, which are kept in the Archives Collection of the Croatian School Museum, is trying to output the importance of these types of important and substantially rich historical sources for the period from the end of the 19th century until the first half of the 20th century. The role and the authority of teachers, this minority of educated class of population in the majority of illiterate and predominantly rural population in Croatia during the first half of the 20th century, was much wider for the development of society than the school employee. This role was, literally, enlightening and leading in the promotion of advanced ideas in their areas. To that extent are the biographies of teachers and their work interesting and wider than personal biographies, where history of education is reflected along with towns where they worked. Preserved archival material of teachers’ and professors’ personals in the state archives and in the Archives Collection of the Croatian School Museum is a valuable source for this type of historical research. Starting from the point that during the entire first half of the 20th century the recording of Employees’ Papers and Personals of Civil Servants was obligatory, therefore for teachers and professors also, a great and valuable documentation/historical documents wascreated on the development of education and teaching in Croatia, which is the source for different historical researches in the field of school systems – biographies of teachers and professors, education and qualifications of teachers, development and structure of teaching, history of school, development of teaching in certain areas and in the entire Croatia. Clearly defined provisions on recording and keeping personal documentation – Employees’ Papers and Personals and documents within are the basis for uniformity, thoroughness and comprehensiveness of the unique system – public teaching. Thousands of preserved Employees’ Papers and Personals are a valuable database for teaching in Croatia, which allows us clearer insight into and awareness on its development a lot more in relation to its previous periods.
