Education of Rijeka’s youth for trade between two world wars
Manon Giron
Abstract
The end of the First World War was the turning point in the constitutional status of Rijeka (present day western part of the town). Hence, since the break up of Austria-Hungary in 1918 this area was included in the new constituent State of Slovenians, Serbs and Croats (SHS) until 1924, then it would be divided among the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians (SHS), Italian Kingdom and Rijeka’s State, and in the final division Rijeka was given to Italy. The change of state sovereignty would directly affect the change of school curricula and syllabi, the teaching language and the school system. The secondary school for trade in Rijeka was educating future employees in trade sector and it was a two-year vocational school. It enrolled students who had completed a three-year course of secondary school for merchants. The entire education was in Italian language until the liberation of Rijeka in 1945, since then in Croatian. The school was closed in 1947. This article introduces us to the way trade specialists were educated. Students acquired good knowledge in vocational subjects, as well as general subjects until the Bottai Reform that introduced subjects aimed to fascistization of youth. After the racial laws were introduced in the school system the first to leave were Jews, and after 1945 Italian students left the school.
