Abstract

Ferdo Rusan (1810 – 1879) is known as an Illyric poet and composer of patriotic songs. However, his fields of activities were much more diverse and in this paper we are presenting Rusan’s efforts, who lived in Šemovci and Virje, on the territory of Đurđevačka regiment, to indicate the backwardness of the school system and his required changes and reforms in the period from 1845 until 1868. Rusan’s attempt to write for the entire Croatia is very interesting because of how he is doing it and because of the thoughts he is presenting. Without any doubt both Rusan’s and his friend’s, Franjo Lugarić (who was a teacher), efforts drew attention toVirje as an educational center and created preconditions for constructing a new modern school building in Virje at the time when Izdior Kršnjavi was the Chairman of Department for Religious Affairs and Teaching, and which became the hotbed for the middle-class, practical education in this part of Croatia.
