The Croatian School Museum in Zagreb
Tomo Žalac
Sažetak
The idea about establishing the Croatian School Museum was conceived at the 1st general meeting of the Croatian Pedagogic–Literary Society (“Society”) in 1871. It has been set in the Regulations of the Society on the “establishment of the library and the collections aimed at professional training and general education of Croatian teachers”. Society founders very soon started collecting the books for the library and teaching aids from schools, cultural institutions and foreign producers of classroom devices (Modec, etc.) and to prepare exhibitions with the financial support of Country Government. Newly constructed Croatian Teachers’ Home could accommodate the library and the collection. In 1901 Society elected Mr. Antun Cuvaj, a very professional and energetic school supervisor, its president. At the decision of the Management Board Mr. Tomislav Ivkanac, Society’s vice–president, and Ms. Milka Pogačić, president of Teachers’ Club, had to undertake necessary actions for the establishment of the Museum. Opening ceremony of the Croatian School Museum was on 19 August, 1901. The Museum ceased its activities during the 1st World War. Between the two World Wars and during the 2nd World War the collection had been stored at several places.
After the War the material and documentation for the museum regarding education was gathered from other institutions (i. e. Ministry of Education) and other city museums. Much credit for this goes to Mr. Marijan Markovac and Mr. Antun Tunkl. Following the exhibitions of schooling and educational system held at the liberated Croatian territories and refugee camps in Italy, Africa and Vojvodina (1949), the Museum was enriched with contemporary documents. Old testimonials and the heritage of the deceased teachers and pedagogues had been also collected. Being financially incapable of developing the Pedagogic library and the Museum collection, Society was an independent institution on the city budget. On 18 July, 1953 the Peoples’ Committee of Zagreb took over the Croatian School Museum and gave it the status of other Zagreb museums. Its first director was Antun Bauer, Ph.D. and the first curator was Ms. Nada Gollner. The Museum had its Statute and Council, presided (over 10 years) by Mr. Tomo Žalac. That reflected the relation and influence of Society on the activities and further development of the Museum. Until 1967 “Davorin Trstenjak” library had been managed by Society through its representatives Dragutin Pazman and Zvonko Priselac. After 1967 it became an integral part of the Museum. On 16 November, 1960 the Management Board of Society decided to transfer the Pedagogic archive to the Museum. After the war prof. Nikola Zec took over the responsibility for pedagogic archives and since 1953 prof. Mihajlo Ogrizović has worked on setting the archives on behalf of Society. Publishing activities of the Museum: 1. In 1962 the Museum printed and published scientific almanac Anthology of School and Education; Pedagogic Museum from Belgrade and the Slovenian School Museum from Ljubljana joined it in early 1964.
2. In 1973 the Croatian School Museum designed the project on the research of the school system and education history in Croatia. It covered the period from the beginning of literacy campaign to present day (printed in five volumes, each covering separate historical period). The project was funded by the Croatian Ministry of Culture. Members of the editorial board were: Branko Pleše, secretary and manager of the Museum; Jaroslav Šidak, Dragutin Pazman, Mihajlo Ogrizović, Tomo Žalac and Ante Vukasović, editorial staff and specialist consultants for the corresponding historic periods and programme preparation. Due to demise of two members (Mr. Šidak and Mr. Pazman) and some difficulties, only volume IV was published Schooling System and Education in Croatia in the period 1941–1945 (editor – Tomo Žalac in cooperation with eleven Croatian historians and pedagogues; co–editors – the Croatian School Museum and Školska knjiga, 1988, p. 464).
