Sažetak

The long tradition of higher education in Zadar started in 1396 with the establishement of the Dominican General institute of learning which is at the same time the first university in Croatia. The enormous contribution of Zadar to education teachers started with the first course for teachers in Dalmatia established in 1821. This was followed by the first Dalmatian Men’s school
for teachers where courses were taught in Croatian, the School for teachers established in 1945 and the Pedagogical Academy which got under way in 1961. From its beginnings in 1956 the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar, as the first faculty to be founded in Dalmatia after WW II, integrated within itself both the tendencies of higher education and those preparing teachers which had been previously separated.
As a general course, obligatory for all study groups preparing teachers, pedagogy was a part of the Faculty of Philosophy from the very beginnings. In 1958 it was organised into a Chair of Pedagogy. Fourty years ago, in the academic year 1961/62, the Chair, alongside providing a general course, initiated a three–years study of pedagogy as a minor which could be studied in combination with another four–year major subject. From the academic year 1966/67 the Chair of Pedagogy developed into the Departement for Pedagogy which encompassed the Chair for General Pedagogy and the Chairs for Didactics and Methodology of teaching. Up to the academic year 1974/75 the Faculty in Zadar was a part of the University of Zagreb when it became a constituent part of the University in Split. When it became a part of the University of Split pedagogy was organised into a single Chair for General Pedagogy and Didactics and became incorporated into the Department for the social sciences. With the gradual expansion of
general pedagogical subjects on the study groups preparing future teachers and the continuation of the study of pedagogy as a minor, for three years in a row from the academic year 1975/76 candidates from higher schools enrolled in and studied the fifth semester program. This was a two year course of Study for school instructors which gave a degree on the level of the first major subject. In the academic year 1976/77 candidates continued to enrol into the study of pedagogy as a three year minor or as a major four year subject which could be combined with another subject. At the same time the expansion of the Chair of General Pedagogy and Didactics into the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology within the Faculty unit of the historical–social sciences contributed to initiating the study of psychology. Starting the next academic year pedagogy was only studied as a major in combination with another subject during a four years course of study. It remained an obligatory subject in the new concept of General and Common courses for all study groups preparing teachers. When the study of psychology became independent in the academic year 1978/79 developing a year later into the Department of Psychology, the newly formed Department of Pedagogy first became a constituent part of the Institute for pedagogy, education of preschool teachers and elementary school teachers and afterwards it became a part of the Institute for philosophy, pedagogy, psychology and sociology where it has remained up to the present moment. Between 1982/83 and 1993/94 pedagogy was a one subject course of study but then it returned to the previous setup and can today be studied alongside any other study group off ered at the Faculty. Alongside organising its own course of study participating in carrying out the Common course program for the Faculty, the Department of Pedagogy continually organises and runs the Supplementary pedagogical–psychological program of educating teachers who have not completed a program or school for teachers. In addition, its members participate in other institutions of higher learning, (co)organise scholarly and professional gatherings, initiate and/or
participate in various scientific–research projects and other activities. Of the many university professors and their associates who contributed to the developement of pedagogy at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar, the fi rst chair and study of pedagogy organised in Croatia outside of the University of Zagreb, one has to particularly underline the efforts of prof Vladimir Janković, prof Josip Pivac and prof Mate Zaninović.
