Periods in the Development of Croatian Language Teaching Methodology

In its historical development to the status of a scientific discipline, Croatian language teaching methodology passed through four main periods: implicit methodology, protomethodology, experience methodology and scientific methodology. These periods are determined by criteria essential to methodology: teaching in the Croatian language, the appearance of the first textbooks in Croatian, the education of Croatian language teachers and the introduction of methodology in University studies as a separate discipline. The period of implicit methodology extends from the beginnings to the appearance of the first textbook in 1527, the second period of protomethodology extends from 1527 to the introduction of Croatian language professors (1850), the third period of experience methodology lasts from 1850 until the establishment of teaching methodology as a course of study at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1953 and, finally, the fourth period of scientific methodology stretches from its introduction at University level to the present day. A particular state of methodological theory and practice marks each of these periods. Dragutin Rosandić (the first head of a University Department for methodology) and Stjepko Težak are considered to be the founders of Croatian language teaching methodology. In their own fields, they have published essential scientific methodology books and textbooks for students and teachers’ manuals which contain their methodological theories, they have also educated a significant number of scientific methodologists. The methodology of the Croatian language is taught at all teacher training colleges and tertiary establishments where Croatian is studied, it has a broad scientific corps and experts, with its own journals, research and other scientometric elements.
