Abstract

In the introduction of the work the author discusses the significance of the written word and education for the Jewish people through the history and in the second part of the text she presents Jewish schools and education in Croatia, that is, on the territory under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia.

A written word is a gift of God for the Jewish and their schools next to sinagogues Talmud Tora, heders, meldars and ješivs which have almost been functioning for three millennium, are the institutions intended for the religious education. Since the emancipation of Jews within the European diaspora, except religious, many other schools, like public and state schools of secular character were introduced.

According to the statistical data collected from the school reports one can conclude that the Jewish, in comparison with the members of other religions in Croatia, had the greatest percentage of children and young people included in primary, secondary and college education. This is, in fact, an indicator showing the importance of the written word and education for the Jewish.

In her research the author used the archival meterials, legal regulations, literature and tradition as well as the methods of demography. She used them as subsidiary disciplines in reconstructing the composition of population.
