Abstract
Mammary gland tumours are among the most common tumours in rabbits and, as in cats, malignant histological forms predominate. There is currently no standardised classification of tumours in rabbits, and prognostic factors are unknown. They occur in a wide age range and almost exclusively in females or spayed females. Most mammary gland tumours are carcinomas. They are characterised by secretory activity and heterogeneity, so that they can occur together with non-neoplastic or benign changes in the mammary gland. The secretory activity may be an indication of the influence of prolactin on tumour development. Although carcinomas are often negative for oestrogen and progesterone receptors, this does not completely rule out an influence on tumour development. The primary option for the treatment of mammary gland tumours in rabbits is surgical resection. The prognosis for rabbits with adenocarcinoma of the mammary gland is generally poor, especially if metastases have occurred.
