The Contribution of the Croatian-Slavonian Agricultural Society to the Development of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Medicine from 1842 to 1849

Sažetak
This article presents articles that were published in the journal List mesečni (Monthly Journal) from 1842 to 1849 (whose first four editions were known as Priopćenje članovom horvatsko-slavonskoga Gospodarskog društva (Announcements by Members of the Croatian-Slavonian Agricultural Society), that are important for livestock breeding and veterinary medicine. In that period of time, 36 articles were published, some relating to proposals to improve livesto,ck breeding, and others to the long term preservation of products of animal origin. The following number of articles were published by year: 1842 – 1 article, 1843 – 6 articles, 1844 – 8 articles, 1845 – 1 article, 1846 – 2 articles, 1847 – 2 articles, 1848 – 8 articles, and 1849 – 4 articles. Twelve of these articles dealt with cattle breeding, ten with products of animal origin and their preservation, three with horse breeding, three with poultry, diseases of domestic animals and fish, two with bees, and one each related to sheep keeping, treating diseased animals, and animal welfare. In these articles the historical terms used for animals were: marha, marva, stoka, živina etc. The names of the authors of these articles were most often
not mentioned, or the editorial board claimed authorship, and in some articles only the author’s initials are given. In this article some old expressions have been left deliberately to preserve their memory and for us to learn their meaning, and some because the authors were unable to find an equivalent present-day expression. The article presents ground-breaking articles of an informative and advisory nature.
