Abstract

The paper examines the development of history and geography teacher education at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb from 1874 to 1914. The focus is on the teacher certification exam for high school subjects in history and geography, which was a prerequisite for the teaching profession in secondary schools. This exam was regulated starting in 1877, when the first regulations for teacher certification in Croatia and Slavonia were enacted, and it remained unchanged until the end of the period under study. Out of the 414 students of history enrolled during this period, 139 took the teacher certification exam in history and geography. This figure represented one-third of the total number of students enrolled in history studies during this period. The paper presents a profile of these first local history teachers who completed their studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and passed the exam before the Royal Examination Commission in Zagreb. In addition to quantitative data, the paper explores the organization and process of the teacher certification exam, the success rates of candidates, the topics of their final theses, and notable episodes from student files that are continuously preserved in the Croatian State Archive. It was a rather demanding exam that, in most cases, was taken over the course of several years. An appendix to the paper includes a list of the first certified history teachers from this period. This research aims to make a modest contribution to the history of education in Croatia at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, particularly in the area of history teacher education.
