Sažetak

Jaroslav Šidak, historian and university professor, is one of the most important figures in ex-Yugoslavian and Croatian historiography. He acted during the Second World War, in the Independent State of Croatia, and then in socialist Yugoslavia. The Yugoslav secret services followed Jaroslav Šidak from the end of the war until the mid-1970s, as evidenced by 40 pages of his UDB Dossier. The analysis of his files points us to the usual interest and control of the communist regime over intellectuals. It testifies to his political and ideological, even private life and orientation, but also to the main fields of interest of the secret police, i.e. of the system. Even if we only focus on the data and context from his Dossier, it is clear that Šidak was a typical example of a civil liberal intellectual in the time of totalitarian ideologies. His career path was halfway between surviving life under ideologies and maintaining scientific integrity. One could hardly call him an opponent of the regime, but rather a passive opposition. The system also recognized that. In the first phase, the main interest of the communist authorities was his relation with the authorities and ideology of the Independent State of Croatia, but it was concluded that Šidak focused on scientific work during that time. Šidak survived post-war filter of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia due to ideological inactivity in the NDH, and his professional potential. Support for Tito’s faction in the Communist Party of Yugoslavia after 1948 definitely won Šidak›s position. Strained Yugoslav relations with Lager during the 1950s and 1960s again put Šidak under “measures”. As a Czech, Šidak had academic and private connections with the Czechoslovak consuls in Zagreb. It turned out that these connections, despite a degree of sympathy for Czechoslovakia, were only related to business and without any anti-state intention or action. Šidak has always been considered as a person who is not a sympathizer of the communist regime, however, his greatest protection was the great scientific reputation he enjoyed in socialist Yugoslavia, writing an unbiased history despite ideological constraints (or within them).
