Abstract

This article provides a short analysis of nation and nationalism studies in Croatian historiography, focusing on three key historians in this field: Mirjana Gross, Nikša Stančić and Petar Korunić. It outlines the approaches, methods and models used in their research on the formation of the Croatian nation and its subsequent development. Mirjana Gross is noted for her methodological precision and highlighting the role of a modernisation process in shaping the Croatian nation. Nikša Stančić has extended this research by situating Croatian nationalism in a wider (Central) European context, emphasizing the role of a cultural element in the early stage of the nation-building process and the role of political parties in the late stage. Lastly, Korunić examined identity formation within his longue durée perspective, framing nations and national identities as dynamic and evolving social constructs. Their works reflected broader trends within the studies of nation and nationalism while identifying gaps for future research.
