The History of the Department of History through the Exhibition Activities of the History Collection of the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb (Summary)

Sažetak
This paper presents the exhibition activities of a group of creative authors – employees, students, and alumni of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb – connected to the History Collection in the Faculty Library, during the period from 2019 to 2024. The initial impetus for these activities came from the processing of the book legacy of Professor Mirjana Gross in 2018/2019, during which a large number of personal items – photographs, letters, and memorabilia – were discovered among her books, revealing the extraordinary life story of the professor. This organically led to the idea of expanding her story, and with the support of the Department of History, an exhibition was organized entitled Mirjana Gross, a Historian of a Special Kind. The exhibition achieved considerable success, became a permanent installation in the Mirjana Gross Room (A-202), and later evolved into the Faculty’s first virtual exhibition.
Subsequently, both through individual initiative and suggestions from the Department, a series of equally successful exhibitions followed, focusing on the history of the Department and the people who shaped it. In 2021, during the height of the pandemic, the 135th anniversary of the Department of History Library (today’s History Collection) was commemorated through an exhibition that traced its origins and development, with special emphasis on the early librarians and professors who contributed to its growth. The exhibition 135 Years of the History Collection also became a permanent display in Room A-201, the former space of the Department Library. Following this, on the initiative of Department members, the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Croatian History was marked with a special exhibition titled The Institute of Croatian History 1971–2021.
At the end of 2023, with support from the University Rectorate, the Faculty, and the Department, preparations began for the celebration of 150 years of the modern University of Zagreb, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Department of History as one of its oldest departments. This was done through a commemorative exhibition on Matija Mesić, the first rector of the University and the first professor of Croatian history at the Department: Towards the 150th Anniversary – Matija Mesić, the First Rector of the University of Zagreb.
