Abstract
The primary objective of educational institutions is to equip children and young people with the capacity for self-aware and responsible participation in socio-political and economic life, for the benefit of the wider community. Despite high educational standards, contemporary education systems often fall short of achieving the desired outcomes, particularly in the domain of moral and character development. This is reflected in the significant prevalence of risk-taking behaviours among children and adolescents in the Republic of Croatia. In seeking possible explanations and solutions, educational models that have consistently achieved their intended goals over time may offer valuable insights. One such model is Don Bosco’s preventive pedagogical system. This paper aims to provide a systematic overview of the theoretical foundations and key elements of Don Bosco’s approach and to identify potential guidelines for integrating selected components into the current educational framework in Croatia. Rooted in Christian anthropology, this system offers essential elements for holistic education that transcend cultural and national boundaries. The findings indicate that key Croatian educational policy documents recognize the need to incorporate both religious and behavioural dimensions. The religious dimension involves valuing religiosity within the overall educational plan and curriculum, while the behavioural dimension focuses on building trust-based relationships between educators and learners, and fostering an environment where discipline is perceived as a positive and formative aspect. In practice, Don Bosco’s preventive system can be implemented in the daily work of teachers and educators through the use of pedagogical tools such as a supportive environment, active presence, and kindness.
