Abstract

This paper examines the arguments employed by the Herzegovinian Franciscans to gain support for the implementation of the idea of building a monastery and a church in Herzegovina and separating the Herzegovinian parishes into a separate Franciscan custody and apostolic vicariate, independent of the Province of Bosnia Srebrena and the Bosnian Apostolic Vicariate, which was fully achieved in the period from 1844 to 1852. The paper is based on four letters written in 1843 by Herzegovinian Franciscans to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and to the Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna, Lodovico Altieri. The texts of these documents are published in the second volume of the collection Acta Franciscana Hercegovinae. Among the arguments presented in the letters are a number of unfavorable religious, social, and economic circumstances arising from the then church structure, and favorable political circumstances for implementing the idea of separation, as well as the large number of Catholics in Herzegovina, and the existence of their own Herzegovinian church institutions in the past.
