Abstract

The art of coloring and decorating zucchinis, described in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Croatia, dates back to the 18th century. It is an art form predominantly preserved in Gradište, a small village famous for its many colorful and decorated zucchinis and its continuous commitment to preserving this tradition. The article combines a subjective and objective approach to offer a comprehensive overview of this art. Relevant literature was analyzed, and interviews were conducted with zucchini artists from Gradište, which enabled a deeper understanding of this tradition from different perspectives. Zucchini decoration is not just a technique. Moreover, it is a living cultural heritage with a priceless value of cultural and artistic expression. This skill is deeply rooted in history and tradition, representing a precious part of the community’s identity and culture, and as such, it should be nurtured.
