In the Collection of Terrestrial Archaeology of the Hvar Heritage Museum, some of the artifacts originate from Hvar’s cave archaeological sites, significant prehistoric sites primarily known for ceramic finds from the Late Neolithic, specifically the Hvar culture. However, among the artifacts from Markova Cave in the Collection, the items made of chert are most represented.
The introductory part of the paper summarizes the results of research in Markova Cave and the basic characteristics of the artifacts based on published reports by Grga Novak and Božidar Čečuk, who explored Markova Cave during the second half of the 20th century. It describes the process of acquisition and professional processing of the material at the Museum and compares the number of artifacts in the Collection with the number of the published artifacts.
The catalog list, as a document of professional work in processing museum objects, systematizes in one place all the chert artifacts from Novak’s excavations of Markova Cave in the Collection, with the aim of their further study and presentation. It provides an insight into a part of the museum’s holdings, making this important segment of the material culture of the Hvar Neolithic more accessible and increasing awareness of their value among the wider public. The catalog includes 217 items. They are classified typologically and chronologically. Knives predominate, followed by knife-raclettes, raclettes, scrapers, drills, sickles, saws, chisels, arrowheads, cleavers, other tools, a dagger, and flakes. A smaller number of items date to the Early Neolithic, during the Impresso culture. The majority of the items date to the Late Neolithic, during the Hvar culture.
