Sažetak

According to documents from the archives of the Hvar Heritage Museum, the Hvar Municipality Fund, in 1924, the Municipal Administration and Mayor Dr. Josip Avelini sent a letter to artists from Croatia and abroad, informing them of their intention to establish a "Pinacoteca of Contemporary Art" to be housed in the city’s Lodge. They invited the artists to offer their works for purchase. Following the documents from the file titled "Pinacoteca," we learn that the majority of the artists who received the letter responded to the call. It is also revealed that the Municipality purchased some of the paintings directly from the artists, while others were acquired through the newly opened Galić Salon in Split. By comparing the lists from the 1929 and 1939 Kursalon Handover Minutes and the documents from the Hvar Municipality Fund (FOH), it can be confidently concluded that the idea of a gallery of contemporary painters came to life and that a permanent exhibition was housed in the Loggia, in two rooms of the Kursalon—the outer and inner one. The paintings in the outer, representative hall were probably placed on the northern wall, but unfortunately, there are no existing photographs to document this. The exhibited works included paintings by artists who had exhibited their work at the Galić Salon in Split or who had stayed in Hvar, painting for travel guides or graphic portfolios. With a few exceptions, all the paintings depicted Hvar motifs, and the following artists were represented: Vladimir Kirin, Petar Bibić, Jerolim Miše, Hipolit Danilović Majkovski, Dušan Kokotović, Mirko Rački, Vladimir Varlaj, Stipan Baković, Tomislav Krizman, Niko Nardelli, Ivan Mirković, Walter Tyndale, Emil Frolich, and Hermann Croissant. According to the documents, a sculpture by Fran Kršinić was also acquired. Of all the paintings in this permanent exhibition at the Hvar Loggia, which we have attempted to reconstruct here, only one painting by Jerolim Miše, "Vegetable Seller," has survived to this day and is part of the collection of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection of the Hvar Heritage Museum. We can only regret that the valuable collection of works of art purchased by the Hvar Municipality has disappeared through many ownership changes over the past 100 years and is no longer accessible to the public. This collection had not only artistic but also significant cultural and historical value, as most of the paintings depicted Hvar motifs created by prominent artists of the time. The very fact that such a gallery existed outside larger urban centers at that time is probably unique in our context and speaks a lot about the cultural atmosphere in Hvar Town during that era.
