The Problem of Youth in Catechisation in our Circumstances
Marko Pranjić
Abstract
The starting point of this reflection is the rapid fall in the number of young people who after the confirmation take part in catechism ins-tructions. The reasons for that lay in young people as well as in the teacher himself. Young people need to be independent and their inclination towards criticism is very strong. The catechist usually has a monological approach in catechisation of young people; he lacks the more profound knowledge about his students; he is unable to catechise in a creative way; his catechetical speech is to the great extent not understandable and he does not act to give evidence. Many reasons lay in the church structures: there is no sacramental catechesis between confirmation and marriage; there is only a small number of adequate functions in which the young person can take part after the confirmation; the four services in the church: kerygma, diaconia, koinonia, liturgia are not differentiated enough nor are the catechetical programs; no complete and worked out catechetical plan exists at the moment. Some reasons can be seen in the environment itself: sociologically unexamined students, multiconfessional context, specific social environment with atheistic connotation. Because of all these reasons the youth catechisation in our circumstances presupposes a complex approach and many different working methods in order to be what we expect it to become.
