Sažetak
The contemporary state of public order requires the police to adopt an organised and methodologically grounded approach to increasingly complex situations. Police officers are regularly exposed to numerous risks and must therefore possess advanced knowledge of combat sports and martial skills in order to respond effectively in stressful and dangerous circumstances. Many European countries have developed their own systems of attack and defence, drawing upon elements of various martial arts and adapting them to the specific requirements of police training. Knowledge and application of martial arts and skills have always been widely represented in the training of Croatian police officers. Among the sports that officers are required to master are boxing, karate and judo, alongside techniques for defence and arrest (overcoming active and passive resistance). Elements of karate include different types of strikes, blocks, stances and movements, which together form the foundation of karate and enable the effective combination of counterattacks, defensive strategies and tactics in diverse situations. Beyond physical conditioning, karate promotes the principles of self-discipline, respect and self-control, thereby extending its value beyond the realm of sport. For this reason, the integration of karate techniques applicable to policing is expected to improve physical preparedness, confidence and situational effectiveness in the use of coercive measures. It is indisputable that the number of training hours dedicated to the most relevant karate elements should be increased within both general and specialist police programmes. Furthermore, police training should incorporate additional elements that are beneficial to policing practice but remain insufficiently implemented.
