Sažetak

Social networks have become central hubs of communication in the modern world. The launch of Facebook in 2004 initiated a revolution in communication within the so-called virtual space. Today, alongside the somewhat outdated Facebook, more relevant platforms for virtual communication include YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and others. Their mode of operation has led to significant shifts in the communication paradigm, as they enable millions of users to simultaneously follow and participate in interactions. A common feature of these platforms in the virtual space is the requirement for user registration and profile creation; that is, by registering, users select (or create) a username to freely engage in communication, follow or seek information, and share content within the virtual space. A registered user can participate in virtual communication as a creator of topics and discussions, and it is precisely this aspect of communication that is examined in this study. Using a case study approach, the linguistic behaviour of registered users on two selected social networks is observed and analysed through discussions that emerged in the comments section following the publication of breaking news in March 2024. The research focuses on and analyses two levels within the comments: (1) the usernames created by users and (2) the language and style of commenting.
