Sažetak

This paper focuses on the north gate of the ancient Jader, traditionally known as Porta Marina, which the author of this text has been studying for years – by the means of autopsy and analysing photographs using the wall reading method, which is a fine indicator of the interrelations among the phases in the development. This gate directly connected the protected (north) harbour of Jader with the east side of the Forum, and the Forum with the gate on the opposite (south) side of the city walls, which has not been preserved. Jader has a regular orthogonal street network, i.e. a mesh structure of decumani and cardines. Every cardo stretches from the south to the north side of the fortification. At the end of the principal cardo, there is a gate connecting the most important city symbol – the Forum – with the arch. It ought primarily to be established that the front side of the gate differs considerably from the reverse side. It is an unequivocal indicator to the fact that they had not been built simultaneously, but at different points in time. This may clearly be observed from both the stylistic and the construction angles. The seafront façade is undoubtedly of a more modest 16thcentury Venetian origin, when Serenissima was erecting terrapienos in Zadar. The reverse side of the same gate, facing the town, is entirely different – both technically and stylistically. The long vertical fugue connecting two different wall structures clearly shows that the gate had been carefully set in harmony with the city walls. The aforementioned examples leave no doubt that the trend of adding ornamental elements characteristic for triumphal arches onto the gates was present in several bigger and richer towns in the Roman province of Dalmatia (Asseria, Burnum, Aenona, Salona, Aequum), and, indeed, in the entire east Adriatic (Pula). The ornaments added are recognized as Roman imperial symbols.
