Sažetak

The subject of the paper is the Zadar Registry of Deaths 1651–1667, covering the period of the Cretan War 1645–1669. The Zadar population has been analysed by researching individual class and professional groups (ecclesiastic officials, members of the Venetian military and civil administration, artisans, traders, soldiers, fishermen, sailors, land workers, et al.). The deceased were buried in 23 churches and chapels. The Registry has been arranged in the form of a list, containing general personal data on the deceased person – name and surname, marital status and the husband’s name for women, name of the father for children. The occupation of the deceased would seldom be included; priesthood and nobility were especially marked. The deceased would be buried in 23 churches and chapels in Zadar.
In total, 1,623 deceased persons have been recorded in the Registry. There is no mention of the professional group the deceased belonged to in 944 cases. The Registry includes entries for 340 persons with various occupations related to the artisan, maritime and hospitality sectors, and members of their families; 205 members of military units or members of their families; 35 members of civil authorities, civil servants, and members of their families; as well as 101 priests, nuns, and members of their families. It has been concluded that people from Zadar or the ones whose origin has not been entered make the majority of the residents of Zadar, who have been included in this Registry of Deaths. The least number of persons included in this Registry originated from the Croatian hinterland (only three), whereas the majority of the recorded persons originated from other Venetian areas, as well as from the Zadar hinterland and archipelago. The majority thereof came to Zadar to assume various civil and military posts – as members of army crews, artisans or priests. Contrary to the earlier analysed Zadar registries of deaths, this Registry includes very few persons from the present parts of Zadar (Bokanjac, Diklo, Zadarski Dračevac, or the remains of the Zadar Varoš). The preserved local registries bear witness to the fact that as everyday life started returning to these settlements, so did consequently the residents too. Subsequently, they were buried there.
