Sažetak
This paper follows up on the yearlong research of the Croatian-Venetian relations in the Early Modern Age, and in particular on the issue of the share of the Croats in military units of the Venetian Republic. The research rests on the insight into the material kept at the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, more precisely the holdings named Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli, which contains lists of units forming part of the Venetian overseas land units. The research focuses on the infantry (Fanti Oltramarini) and the cavalry units (Cavalleria Croati, Croati a cavallo), with specific interest in the soldiers from the Bukovica region. The research interval covers the entire 18th century, the period from which the material preserved for this research originates. Following the structure of the sources, or rather the available archival material, the share of soldiers from Bukovica in the mentioned units, their micro-local
origin by settlement, as well as their share in military units by interval, have been meticulously studied. The research furthermore includes the study of the duration of their military service, soldiers from the same families, officer ranks (mainly the lower ones), as well as the average age of the soldiers. In the final part of the paper, the locations where the lists had been composed are defined, and data on the regiments in which soldiers from this area had taken active part summarised. Military commanders (colonels) who originated from Dalmatia and Bay of Kotor are particularly stressed here. Tables at the end of the paper offer lists of all the so far researched soldiers from Bukovica in the Venetian professional land units.
