Anti-Communist Resistance in Drniška Krajina: Operation of Petar Bogić’s Crusader Group (1945–1949)
* Dopisni autor.
Sažetak
At the end of 1944, within weeks after military operations in Dalmatia had ended, there emerged armed guerrilla groups that would present the mainstay of the anti-communist resistance in the following years. Crusader groups were particularly active in the Dalmatian hinterland, or rather in the area along the border with Bosnia and Hercegovina. There, the crusaders persisted the longest – until 1951, when Nedjeljko Piplica, the last crusader from Imotski, was arrested. Nevertheless, the documents in safekeeping at the State Archives in Split, in the fund of the Ministry of the Interior for Dalmatia, reveal that armed groups were present in Drniška krajina even after Piplica’s arrest – until 1953 at the earliest. This moves the time limit of the operation of the crusader groups considerably. The best-known crusader group in the Drniš area was Petar Bogić’s group, formed in 1945 and active until 1949, when Bogić was liquidated on Svilaja. The preserved archival documents reveal that this group was exceptionally mobile, and strengthened by a wide network of outlaws in parts of the Drniš, Split and Trogir Districts, with occasional crossings to the Sinj, Šibenik and Vodice Districts. Hence was the operation of the State Security Service (UDBA) made extremely difficult; it primarily depended on recruiting the arrested outlaws and crusaders, who were forced to collaborate by applying various coercive methods. The recruitment of Bogić’s most trusted outlaws led to the end of this group and to Bogić’s liquidation. This paper pays special attention to the reconstruction of the operation of this group in the period between 1946 and 1948, from which the largest number of reports by UDBA has been preserved.
