Sažetak
In the political context of socialist Yugoslavia, control over the interpretation of the past was a major issue. Prominent politicians were particularly interested in remaining in control over the interpretation of the past. This text offers an analysis of the conflict between Vladimir Dedijer and Vladimir Bakarić, which lasted 1981–1982, following the publication of Dedijer’s book entitled Novi prilozi za biografiju Josipa Broza Tita vol. II (New Tributes to the Biography of Josip Broz Tito vol. 2). Dedijer’s book was published after the death of Josip Broz Tito, while Yugoslavia was in the middle of a sensitive period of the transition of the rule, and during the escalation of crisis. This book provoked fierce discussions on the past and the political identity. Thereby, the importance of the culture of memory in the context of political positioning for the future was demonstrated. With his book, Dedijer provoked political tensions using historiographic arguments as a tool in the political warfare. In addition to explaining the political context, the text sheds light on the personal relationship between Dedijer and Bakarić. Their relationship before this event was a yearlong peaceful one. Dedijer often emphasized that Bakarić was a person of major democratic capacity – even while he was considered a persona non grata. The text further stresses that Dedijer’s motivation for the conflict might have been composed of multiple layers. On the one hand, this conflict may be observed as a part of a wider political warfare within the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, where certain circles were using the reinterpretation of the past for ensuring political change. On the other hand, Dedijer’s personality and need for possessing secret knowledge and documents played an additional role in this conflict, too. Finally, the conflict between Dedijer and Bakarić illustrates the manner in which historiographic arguments were used for political warfare in Yugoslavia. This is not an issue specifically observed only in the case of Yugoslavia; it may be found in the wider context of political warfare for the control over the past. The text offers an insight into the manner in which the contemporaries understood the political and historiographic conflicts, and how these conflicts shaped the political stage in Yugoslavia.
