Sažetak
The paper examines "Naputchenye za horvatzki prav chteti i piszati" (1808), the first monolingual orthography of the Kajkavian literary language, which simultaneously serves as the first Kajkavian writing and composition textbook. The focus is placed on "Pridavek", a section of the textbook that has so far been viewed primarily as a collection of examples intended for the application of prescribed orthographic and spelling rules. The paper demonstrates that "Pridavek" is a distinct textbook type known as a "pismovnik" (writing and composition textbook, letterbook). Alongside primers, orthographies, and calligraphy manuals, this type of textbook was used at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century to teach Croatian language content in elementary schools. The overview of textbooks used for teaching Croatian mother tongue is situated within the normative framework of the educational reform initiated in the 1770s. Since in the pre-standardization period the same textbooks were often published in parallel editions in both Štokavian and Kajkavian literary languages, the first Kajkavian writing and composition textbook is compared with the Štokavian writing and composition textbook from 1780. The analysis of these two textbooks shows that, regardless of the limited effects of the educational reform – as historiographic literature commonly evaluates the impact of Maria Theresaʼs educational reform in the Croatian parts of the Habsburg Monarchy – by the early 19th century the concept of literacy had already expanded to include the basics of written composition.
