Sažetak
In buildings with mixing mechanical ventilation systems where room ceiling heights range between 2,6 m and 4 m, ceiling swirl diffusers are most commonly used for air supply. This experimental study continues the authors’ previous research on airflow in the jet region of a ceiling swirl diffuser and in the occupied zone of a room ventilated by it. Although the discharge plate of the swirl diffuser used here is radially symmetrical, earlier investigations have shown that the jet of the swirl diffuser may exhibit a certain degree of asymmetry when the diffuser is equipped with a plenum box with a horizontal air supply connection. However, it is not known to what extent this jet asymmetry affects thermal comfort in the occupied zone of the room. This study presents the results of experimental measurements of air velocity and turbulence intensity in the occupied zone below ceiling swirl diffusers with plenum boxes having different mutual orientations of air supply connections. To assess thermal comfort, i.e., the risk of draft occurrence in the occupied zone, PD (percent dissatisfied) values were calculated in the measurement planes based on these two measured quantities. The results show a 20 % difference in maximum recorded values of thermal comfort indices PD depending on the orientation of the air supply connections.
