Sažetak
This article provides an overview of the administrative history, production development, facilities, and history of other key factors that were crucial for the development of the Zagreb Tobacco Factory (Tvornica duhana Zagreb). The factory was founded in 1869 by the Hungarian Ministry of Finance and operated as a state-owned factory under the authority of the Ministry until the end of the First World War. After the disintegration of Austria-Hungary in 1918 and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which later became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the factory continued to operate as a state-owned facility under the supreme authority of the Ministry of Finance in Belgrade. The factory survived the Second World War during which it operated without interruption. After the war, it became part of the new political and socio-economic system of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. The period from 1945 to 1972 was the most significant development in the factory’s history, during which seven smaller companies and plants were integrated into its structure and extensive modernisation of production was undertaken. Between 1972 and 1976, the factory underwent major changes in its administrative and organisational structure, first due to the adoption of constitutional amendments in 1971 and then due to the adoption of the 1976 Law on Associated Labour, when company was transformedinto the Complex Organisation of Associated Labour Duhanprodukt Zagreb. In 1990 the factory was restructured into a socially owned enterprise, and in 1994 it was privatised and converted into a joint-stock company. By 1998, the Rovinj Tobacco Factory (Tvornica duhana Rovinj) had become the largest shareholder in the Zagreb Tobacco Factory. In 2003, Rovinj and Zagreb Tobacco Factories became members of a company called the Adria Group. Production in Zagreb was discontinued in 2007 and the company ceased to exist altogether after merging into the Adria Group in 2016.
