A better life / La miglior vita: a classic of multicultural Istria

Sažetak
In the novel La miglior vita Fulvio Tomizza writes a sentence uttered by a literary character, the son of a sacristan and a sacristan himself, in the imaginary Istrian village of Radovani. It expresses the idea that with each person' departure, a world also vanishes, the ancient world of the Istrian rural microcosm with its symbols: the olive tree, the vine, the red earth. This novel belongs to both Italian and Croatian literature, which would otherwise be almost impossible. This is confirmed by the well-argued proposal of the methodologist from Pula Marko Ljubešić (Ljubešić 2011) to include the croatian translation of La miglior vita, Bolji život, in the teaching of indigenous Istrian literature, because in a correlational interdisciplinary system it includes both the Croatian and Italian languages, history, geography, ethics and sociology, and I would add, even ethnology and anthropology.
